For the first time titanium valves are being offered for the 928 engines, both 2 and 4 valve /cylinder. The cost of these valves new is extremely expensive, generally between $110 and $135 each, a full set costing over $3500. We have sources of these valves and component sets from race engine builders that allow us to offer the components reconditioned to our customers for a fraction of their new cost. These are absolutely the highest quality, best that money can buy titanium valves and valvetrain parts from top level pro teams that change these components every time an engine comes apart. Many of the sets that we receive have run for less than 100 miles, some are difficult to distinguish from new. None of these parts show any wear whatsoever, they don’t even come close to wearing. Titanium Valves: A Solution to 928 Timing Belt Woes !
We are using titanium valves & valvetrain components to increase horsepower and reliability in performance watercooled Porsche engine. By reducing the mass of the valvetrain, the loads on the entire timing mechanism are reduced. One of the biggest enemies of timing belt durability are the “snatching loads” that result from the constant acceleration and de-acceleration of the engine and the valvetrain. We are reducing those loadings significantly by using lighter parts and we are confident that timing belt reliability will be greatly enhanced. The extreme loads that cause belt stretch and fatigue will be reduced substantially.
Titanium is Durable & Can Increase Engine Life
Titanium valves, valvetrain & engine components are now used in the world’s most exotic vehicles. High performance manufacturers use titanium in their exotic & high revving engines because of it’s superiority and the latest alloy’s of titanium are reliable performers. Porsche has used titanium extensively in it’s sprint & endurance racing engines for decades. Less mass in a street/track Porsche engine means reduced loadings and greater operating safety margins for components. Lighter valvetrain components allow reduced valve spring pressures that reduce friction on the camshaft lobe/follower combination. Modified camshaft reliability can be greatly enhanced by this friction reduction, and is just another example of chronic problems in these engines being addressed by 928 Developments using contemporary solutions.
